Privacy policy
Last updated: 17 August 2026
This policy explains what personal data My Chinese processes, for what purpose and for how long. It applies to the mobile app and to this site.
Controller and contact
The controller of the data described in this policy is the owner of My Chinese.
For anything related to it, including exercising the rights set out below, write to contacto@mychinese.app.
What data is processed
The app can be used in two ways, and data processing differs in each.
Without an account (guest mode): no personal data is collected. Study progress, settings and the lesson session are stored only in the local storage of the device and are not sent to any server.
With a Google account: when you sign in, Google provides an email address and a user identifier. From then on, study progress and the word lists linked to that account are stored on a server so they can be synced across devices.
If you contribute an image for a word, a record is kept of which account contributed it and when. That record is internal: it is not shown in the app and is not publicly linked to your account.
In addition, as with any internet connection, infrastructure providers log technical data such as the IP address and the time of the request, for security and operational purposes.
What it is used for
Data is processed solely in order to provide the service:
- Identify the account and keep the session signed in.
- Store and sync study progress and word lists across devices.
- Attribute contributed images and be able to review or withdraw them.
- Keep the service running and protect it against abuse.
What is not done
There is no advertising, no profiling and no tracking for commercial purposes. Data is not sold or shared with third parties for their own purposes. The app includes no third-party analytics or tracking tools.
Legal basis
Processing of account data is based on performing the service you request when you sign in. Processing of technical connection data is based on the legitimate interest of keeping the service secure and available.
Providers involved
The following providers are used to deliver the service, processing data on behalf of My Chinese or as independent controllers within their own scope:
- Google: sign-in with a Google account. Google processes your account data under its own privacy policy.
- Supabase: authentication and the database where progress and word lists of registered accounts are stored.
- Unsplash: the image bank the photos illustrating the words come from. Photo searches are performed from the server, not from your device.
- Cloudflare: hosting and delivery of this site.
How long it is kept
Data linked to an account is kept for as long as the account exists. If you request deletion of your account, the data linked to it is deleted, except for anything that must be kept by legal obligation.
Guest mode data disappears when you uninstall the app or clear its data from the system, because it never left the device.
Your rights
You may request access to your data, its rectification, its erasure, restriction of processing, portability, and you may object to processing. To exercise these rights, write to contacto@mychinese.app stating the email address you signed in with.
If you believe your data has not been handled correctly, you may lodge a complaint with the competent data protection supervisory authority.
Minors
The app can be used without an account and without providing any personal data. Creating an account requires a Google account, subject to the age conditions set by Google itself.
Cookies and local storage
This site uses no cookies and runs no JavaScript: there is nothing to accept or reject.
The app does use local storage on the device or browser to keep progress, settings and, if you have signed in, the active session. This is technical storage required for the app to work; it is not used for advertising.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this same address, with its new update date.
